About the Laboratory

The laboratory provides state of the art equipment in the following areas: cell cultures, DNA analyses, microbiology, pathogenic microorganisms, GMOs, ecotoxicological research, in vitro plant cultures etc.

The laboratory is part of the Biopharmaceutical Laboratory Complex and its main task is evaluation of the biological activity and toxicity.

Activities

Current Activities
  • Human and mammalian cell cultures for testing and characterization of biological activities of various extracts and purified bioactive compounds.
  • Antimicrobial activities of various extracts and individual biologically active compounds.
  • Plant cell and tissue cultures for propagation and maintaining of valuable MAPs accessions and cell lines.
  • Bacterial, yeast and fungi cultures for obtaining and biotransformation of bioactive compounds and production of recombinant proteins.
  • Various applications of molecular biology and recombinant DNA methods including molecular marker applications for genotyping and genetic authenticity analysis, gene expression analysis, tailor-made expression vectors construction and various expression studies.
  • Ecotoxicology testing and valuation of various industry products, wastes, bioactive extracts and compounds.

History:

In 2012, he defended his doctoral degree and earned a Doctorate in Biological Sciences from the Agrobioinstitute Sofia, with a dissertation on the topic 'Cloning, characterization, and expression of genes in plants: New experimental methods, applications, and perspectives'. Since 2013, he has been a professor and head of the Molecular Genetics group at the Agrobioinstitute.
