The Artificial intelligence and CAD systems Lab of Sofia Tech Park together with the Bulgarian companies “InnoLED” and “Elux” are working on an innovation related to the development of a robot for disinfection of spaces using UVC light. The innovation is aimed at supporting the prevention of the spread of Covid-19.
Currently, the company “InnoLED” has another UVC disinfection solution available on the market. The purpose of the partnership with the team of the Sofia Tech Park Laboratory is to make the solution more accessible and widely applicable, so that it can even more effectively and massively help combat the spread of Covid-19 in Bulgaria.
UVC light has a strong antibacterial effect and has been used for many years with great success in medicine for the sterilization of operating rooms and infectious hospitals.Viruses and bacteria in their vegetative form (germs, cocci) are most sensitive to it. Ultraviolet rays represent electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength in the range of 10 to 400 nanometers (nm). Rays with a wavelength between 250 and 270 nanometers are known to be antibacterial. In nature, antibacterial ultraviolet radiation is part of the sun’s light, but most of it does not reach the earth’s surface.
UV-C rays are extremely effective in killing many types of bacteria, molds, viruses and other microorganisms. UV-C is the strongest in the spectral range of 254 nm. The essence of UV disinfection is based on the ability of the UV rays to penetrate the cell wall and inhibit the reproductive capacity of the cell. Ultraviolet radiation directly affects the genetic material of microorganisms (DNA or RNA), thus disrupting the natural processes of life and cell division. This allows up to 99.99% of all pathogens to be eliminated with UV technology in seconds without the addition of chemicals and without harmful side effects.
UVC-based disinfection technologies find their application in the fight against Covid-19, both in hospitals and other medical buildings, as well as in offices, shops, factories, public buildings and pharmacies.
