On April 2, 2025 at 13.30 in Sofia Tech Park a press conference will be held to mark the completion of the upgrade project for the Bulgarian supercomputer Discoverer, which is part of the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU).

Among the official guests of the event will be the Minister of Innovation and Growth Tomislav Donchev, the Minister of Education and Science Krasimir Valchev, the Deputy Mayor in charge of digitalization Sofia Ivan Goychev, Rafal Duczmal, the Chairman of the Governing Board of EuroHPC JU, Anders Dam Jensen, the Executive Director of EuroHPC JU, rectors of universities and researchers, representatives of Bulgarian and international high-tech companies and organizations. A video address will be delivered by European Commissioner for Startups, Research, and Innovation, Ekaterina Zaharieva.

The project for the upgrade of the Bulgarian supercomputer Discoverer, positioned in Sofia Tech Park, is under a EuroHPC JU procedure. It is the first of the European Union’s high-performance machines to be upgraded since its creation in 2021. The implementation of the Discoverer upgrade project is in the context of the EuroHPC JU mission to establish a world-leading supercomputing infrastructure in Europe.

Discoverer+ offers a new class of functionalities and systems specialized for work in the field of artificial intelligence, and therefore responds to the growing needs of users in this technological area – scientific communities, businesses and the public sector in Europe.

The Bulgarian Petascale supercomputer Discoverer has a computing power of 4.5 petaflops and a peak performance of 6 petaflops. The machine is in the TOP 500 world ranking for high-performance machines. The Discoverer project was funded by the Bulgarian national budget and EuroHPC JU. The machine is managed by the consortium “Petascale Supercomputer Bulgaria” with participants Sofia Tech Park JSC, Association “National Center for Computer Applications” and Strategic Center for Artificial Intelligence. The organization brings together the knowledge and over 15 years of experience of Bulgarian scientists and engineers.
