A Press conference on the occasion of the official commissioning of the Petascale supercomputer “Discoverer”

On October 21st , 2021, at 10.00 a press conference will be held on the occasion of the official commissioning of the latest Bulgarian supercomputer “Discoverer”, part of the network of high-performance machines in the Union – European Joint Undertaking for High-Performance Computing – EuroHPC JU. The event will be held in the Incubator building of Sofia Tech Park (Sofia, 111 Tsarigradsko Shosse Blvd.), The Venue Hall.

Invited to participate in the are the EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel, the Executive Director of EuroHPC JU Anders Dam Jensen, the Minister of Economy Daniela Vezieva, the Minister of Education and Science Prof. Nikolay Denkov, the Mayor of Sofia Yordanka Fandakova, Chief Technology Director of Athos and Head of the Research and Innovation Advisory Group at EuroHPC Jean-Pierre Panziera, representatives of BAS, business organizations and companies in the ICT sector, chambers of commerce in Bulgaria and others.

Discoverer with its computing power of 4.5 petaflops and top performance of 6 petaflops is ranked after specialized tests in 91st place in the world’s independent expert ranking of high-performance machines – TOP 500.

The project for the creation of a Bulgarian supercomputer from the network of EuroHPC JU is implemented by the Consortium “Petascale Supercomputer Bulgaria”, with participants “Sofia Tech Park” JSC, Association “National Center for Computer Applications”, Strategic Center for Artificial Intelligence. The consortium combines the knowledge of the member organizations and over 15 years of experience of Bulgarian scientists and engineers. The project is funded by the budgets of Bulgaria and EuroHPC JU. The supercomputer is manufactured and delivered by the global leader in digital transformation – the company “Atos”.

The capacity of the computer system in Bulgaria will be supplemented by 4 more five-scale supercomputers, part of the EuroHPC joint venture network, which will be positioned in Luxembourg, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Portugal, as well as 3 pre-scale supercomputers in Finland, Italy, and Spain. The main goal of the European network of supercomputers is to promote research activities applied in industry and to create favorable conditions for the development of an even better and more competitive European economy.

The attendance on the place is organized in compliance with all measures introduced by the health authorities for the non-proliferation of Covid-19.

Access to the building where the Discoverer supercomputer is located will be provided for operators and journalists from 9.15 am to 9.45 am.
