Blockchain Engineer
Team: Federated Data Lake
Project: BRAIN++ – Bulgaria’s AI Factory Location: Sofia Tech Park (Hybrid / On-site) Type: Full-time
1. About the Project and Our Mission
As part of BRAIN++, Bulgaria’s first comprehensive AI Factory, we are building the infrastructure required to support the development, deployment, and governance of national-scale AI systems. The initiative establishes a national hub for foundation model development, including BgGPT, RoboticsBG, FORSE, and MEDBG, while strengthening Bulgaria’s AI ecosystem and contributing to European digital sovereignty.
Within this initiative, the Federated Data Lake team is building a highly secure federated data infrastructure where autonomous AI agents negotiate, collaborate, and transact across institutions, datasets, and services. The system enables trusted data sharing and automated governance between research organizations, industry partners, and public institutions while maintaining strict compliance with European regulatory frameworks and the EU AI Act.
To enable this ecosystem, we are developing the distributed ledger and identity infrastructure that guarantees the integrity, transparency, and auditability of every system interaction. The blockchain layer will provide a cryptographically verifiable history of data access, agent actions, and automated transactions within the Federated Data Lake.
We are looking for engineers capable of designing secure, private ledger architectures and verifiable identity frameworks for autonomous agents. We do not measure candidates by tenure or the number of generic blockchain deployments they have participated in; we care about their ability to engineer robust distributed systems that guarantee trust, security, and deterministic execution in complex environments.
2. Role Overview
We are seeking a Blockchain Engineer to design and implement the distributed ledger and decentralized identity architecture underpinning the Federated Data Lake ecosystem.
This role focuses on building the immutable ledger, identity verification framework, and cryptographic trust mechanisms that govern how autonomous AI agents interact with datasets, services, and other agents.
You will design the core state models, smart contract workflows, and trust frameworks that ensure every system action is verifiable, auditable, and cryptographically secure.
The role requires a multidisciplinary systems engineer capable of integrating enterprise-grade distributed ledger technology with AI-driven autonomous systems, distributed data infrastructures, and secure mesh-network environments.
3. Required Qualifications
Enterprise DLT & Deterministic Execution
Deep architectural mastery of private, permissioned distributed ledger systems and deterministic smart contract execution. While we utilize R3 Corda, we care more about your fundamental understanding of state models, consensus mechanisms, and mathematically verifiable contract logic than experience with any specific platform.
Secure Smart Contract Workflows
Elite ability to architect, audit, and deploy highly secure, deterministic smart contract workflows. You will design complex multi-step state machine processes governing how autonomous agents interact with datasets, access resources, and trigger automated settlements while preventing logic flaws and vulnerabilities.
Agent Identity & Verification
Exceptional problem-solving ability applied to decentralized identity systems. You must be able to architect frameworks where autonomous AI agents securely hold, present, and verify cryptographic proofs of their capabilities. We utilize W3C Verifiable Credentials, and you should understand how to build these trust frameworks from the ground up.
Tokenomics for Non-Human Actors
Experience designing secure automated incentive mechanisms and token economies. You should understand the game-theoretic and mathematical principles required to govern systems where AI agents are incentivized to perform tasks and penalized for malicious or non-compliant behavior.
Multidisciplinary Systems Integration
You are fundamentally a backend systems engineer with the architectural vision required to integrate enterprise-grade distributed ledger environments (Java/Kotlin-based JVM systems) with Python-heavy AI infrastructure and secure distributed network architectures.
4. Preferred Qualifications
● Deep understanding of Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) and their application in systems where agents must prove compliance without exposing sensitive underlying data.
● Background in algorithmic game theory or automated mechanism design.
● Experience contributing to open-source distributed ledger frameworks, decentralized identity standards, or transparency log protocols.
● Familiarity with data governance, compliance systems, or federated data infrastructures operating across multiple organizations.
5. What We Offer
● Opportunity to work on BRAIN++, Bulgaria’s flagship initiative for building national AI infrastructure.
● Participation in designing the trust and governance layer of the Federated Data Lake, enabling secure collaboration between institutions and AI systems.
● Work on cutting-edge distributed ledger architectures integrated with autonomous AI ecosystems.
● Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams of AI engineers, distributed systems experts, and data scientists.
● Competitive salary aligned with the seniority of the role.
● Flexible working environment
● Opportunities for professional development and research collaboration
● Access to advanced computing infrastructure and large-scale AI systems
